''Data Literacy - Switzerland'' launches a ''Data Literacy Prevention Campaign''

UNITED FOR HEALTH - THANKS TO GOOD HABITS!

Two years after the start of the COVID 19 pandemic, there are finally signs that it is coming to an end. Although there are still regions in which the SARS-CoV2 viruses will occur epidemically or endemically, thanks to high vaccination rates and the immunisation of a large part of the (world) population, COVID-19 seems to have lost its threat potential. Many uncertainties remain, but the all-clear is now given. From a data literacy perspective, we would strive not to simply go back to living as we did before the pandemic after the drastic experiences of the past months, but to learn meaningful lessons from the pandemic. We wish to apply findings and data sensibly adapted to a changed context outside the pandemic.

In recent years, we have seen a significant decline in various non-COVID upper respiratory diseases. The displacement effect by the COVID viruses explains part of this. On the other hand, various data analyses showed that simple protective measures that were implemented comprehensively and consistently against the spread of the COVID viruses were also effective against the transmission of less infectious viruses. In the winter of 2020/2021, not a single young child with a severe RSV infection was hospitalised in Switzerland! A phenomenon never observed before. We could make sustainable use of the experience gained in pandemic times for the benefit of our society by adapting our behaviour accordingly in the long term, especially when we are ill:

  • Let us stick to the rules of hygiene.

  • Let us limit our contacts when we are sick.

  • Let us wear a mask, when we have a cold or a cough.

  • Let us report symptoms of contagious diseases before

and during consultations at a doctor’s, dentist’s office

or at a hospital.

  • Let us vaccinate ourselves according to our risk profile.[1]

By combining these 5 measures in a sensible way, we can avoid  spearding illnesses and protect people at risk (small children, senior citizens, chronically ill people) in a  responsible way. We also contribute to a sustainable reduction in the unwanted transmission of pathogens in doctors' surgeries, treatment rooms, care institutions and hospitals. In this way, we not only have a positive influence on avoidable illness costs and complication rates, but also on social, economic and human well-being.

Let us share respect and solidarity instead of viruses!

Data literacy implies using existing data and knowledge in a meaningful and ethical way for the benefit of society, adapted to the respective context. In this sense, the adapted 'Data Literacy' campaign now uses the much-discussed mask as a newly defined symbol for an increased collective awareness to use situationally sensible, self-responsible combined measures against the unwanted spread of various pathogens:

Let the mask in the right place at the right time be a sign of attention, respect and solidarity.
